How To Combat Anxiety When Starting a Small Business
On February 7, 2022 by Rachel HowardYou’re just starting the business of your dreams. While this is an exciting time, it’s also one filled with stress, worry, and change. All of these components contribute to increasing anxiety. When this happens, it feels like your anxiety is getting in the way of fully being able to enjoy creating your small business.
Understandably so, anxiety is a sometimes frustrating emotion, especially if you have an anxiety disorder. However, even if anxiety is beginning to become more prevalent in your life, there are some coping techniques to combat your anxiety during this time. Continue reading to learn how to calm your anxiety as you embark on this new journey.
Enlist the help of a therapist.
Battling anxiety every day is no easy feat. While starting a new business, it may be normal that your anxiety symptoms have increased. However, just because you’re dealing with any type of anxiety disorder doesn’t mean you need to suffer. Luckily, there is anxiety therapy, which comes in many different varieties. To name a few, there is CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectical behavior therapy), and exposure therapy.
Remember, these are only a few different kinds, as many more therapy subtypes exist. When you get the chance to work one on one with a therapist, you’ll work to slowly acclimate and challenge your anxiety symptoms. You’ll learn how to improve your quality of life and best cope with anxiety attacks, panic attacks, general worries, and phobias.
If needed, medication is also available if you want to couple both therapeutic and medicinal interventions. This way, you’ll get a handle on your anxiety so you can move forward with your business goals.
Stay on top of minor tasks.
Mundane tasks sometimes feel useless when you’re in the middle of building a business and experiencing anxiety. However, it’s a wise idea to stay organized and get these minor tasks completed to improve your mental health. As tasks pile up, it’s completely normal to feel your stress levels increase as well.
Check out this post, which will teach you how to clear your computer’s memory, making room for new files and business information. In turn, you’ll have a well-working computer that isn’t bogged down with junk that makes organizing and storing your small business information more complicated.
Take time to exercise.
Here’s the thing: Exercising isn’t going to automatically stop your anxiety. But, it should be noted that regular exercise is a great way to combat anxiety levels. Even some overwhelming anxiety disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder can benefit from exercise.
In one study, patients were asked to engage in some kind of moderate-intensity workout for 12 weeks. The intensity and frequency of symptoms of anxiety were decreased in these patients post-workout. With this in mind, it’s time to take your physical health seriously, too. Get out there and make yourself go for a walk, run, or swim. Whatever gets you exercising is a key part of effective treatment so you can tackle forming your business.
Remember your worth.
You’re embarking on a new journey when starting this business. This is enough to send the anxiety-ridden into a spiral. Lots of change and challenges leave you feeling like life is out of control. However, this isn’t the case. Anxiety has a sneaky way of trying to get you out of the things you fear most. At the end of the day, your anxiety, while sometimes challenging, is a great protection mechanism against risk. When starting a business, a lot is risky. The uncertainty looms that you could fail, get overwhelmed, or lose everything. Challenge these negative thoughts by remembering why you’re here in the first place.
Think of all of your accomplishments and the dream of what your business will be. Take your anxiety along for the ride and be confident in the business you’re creating.
